Have You Had Your Dryer Vent Cleaned This Year?

Q: No?

A: That’s ok! There is still time.

Q: How often should I have my dryer vent cleaned?

A: Your dryer vents should be cleaned at least every two years, however, if you use your dryer often then it should be cleaned more frequently.

Q: Why should I have my dryer vent cleaned?

A: A clean dryer vent will prevent fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, decrease allergens in your home, and it will allow for your dryer to dry your clothes to the best of its ability.

Q: When is the best time to have it cleaned?

A: Right around the fall, winter is the best time to have it cleaned. Because you and your family will most likely be spending more time indoors having the cleanest air inside your home during this time will help to reduce allergies and respiratory symptoms created by floating dust and lint.

Q: How much will it cost to have someone clean it?

A: The cost can vary depending on the length and location of your vent. You should expect to pay between $75-150.

Q: What should I expect to happen when they come to clean my vents?

A: There are really two processes that are important in the dryer vent cleaning process.

First, the cleaning process. The company will come out with a long brush essentially attached to a vacuum. This brush has the ability to rotate and flex in order to reach all of the areas in your dryer vent. The vacuum will be able to suck out all of the dust, debris, and lint that could be building up and circulating out into your home.

Second, the company should examine the vent looking for anything that might be incorrectly aligned or broken leaving your home at risk for fires. They will also use a tool to test the airflow in the vent. This can tell you if your vent still has blockage or if the air is flowing properly.

Q: Why can’t I just clean my dryer vent with my own vacuum?

A: Simply using a regular vacuum extension head will not agitate the dust and lint on the walls of the vent. Meaning if you leave these things on the walls of your vent, every time you run your dryer that dust and debris can be pushed out into the air in your home. Part of the reason that you clean your dryer vent is to reduce allergens circulating inside your house. A regular vacuum will not effectively do this.
